What Happens With Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Tyler Jorgensen

To help you choose the appropriate window covering for your house, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to you, we can show you how different shutters, blinds, and shades would work in your room. Now you can make an informed decision by visualizing how each window treatment looks with the rest of the room.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Different companies may have different procedures for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will expeience during your Sunburst consultation.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to bring you some options available for your preferred choice. We will also bring alternatives, so you can be sure that your choice matches your ideal.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and talk about what you need in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency needs, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also ask about how the room is used and what aesthetic you want to acheive. The primary target is to complety conceptulaize what your windows will ultimately look like with the treatments installed.

We might show you many different products until we discover the correct window treatment for the room. Most people want to explore a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or picking the perfect stain to match the walls. We’ll also find all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll take the exact measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only plan to buy window treatments for some of your windows. We do this because a lot of our customers want to be able to order additional shutters or blinds without another consultation. Finally, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will give you an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some things you should never experience from any window treatment company. After all, the quality of your sales representative mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

Above all else, your salesperson should respect your home. They should come to your house when promised, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always bring product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should be given a complete written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, jotted down on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject pricing information if they won’t measure your windows. You want to be able to follow how much you should pay and why. If a quote ever seems unbelievable, please ask for references and search for the business’ online reviews.
