What To Expect At Your Austin In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

Before you choose what window covering to buy, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing samples to you, we can demonstate how different shutters, blinds, and shades would work in your room. Now you can make the perfect choice by seeing how each window treatment looks with the rest of the room.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how will showing you different products at your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Different companies may have alternative methods for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will expeience during your Sunburst consultation.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Homeowners looking at window treatment samples.

Begin by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you some options available for your preferred treatment. We will also bring alternatives, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and talk about what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also ask about how the room is used and what style you are looking to acheive. We want to achieve your final vision, so the more information, the better.

We might show you many different products until we discover the correct window treatment for the room. Most people want to explore a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or picking the perfect stain to match the walls. We’ll also find all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll take the exact measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only plan to buy window treatments for a portion of the house. We do this because a lot of our customers want to be able to order additional shutters or blinds with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will give you professional in-home consultation, there are some things you should never experience from any window treatment rep. As they say, the quality of your sales representative mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

First, your rep should treat your home with respect. He or she should come to your house when promised, clean and presentable, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should be given a complete written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information if they won’t measure your windows. You want to be able to follow how much product and installation should cost. Be sure to to ask for references and online reviews.
